I’m always after getting the best out of my subjects during their photo sessions. The job gets easier when they are comfortable and confident about their pose. Some people already know how to do it, some need a bit of directing. So here are a few tips (aka homework) for you guys and gals on getting your best look when you get in front of ANY camera.

Read on.

Headshot and portrait photographer… and one of my heroes, Peter Hurley, coined the term “Squinching”. What is it and how is it done? To quote the inventor —

“… it’s a subtle movement of the eyes (squint meets pinch) that will make you look more confident and instantly photogenic.”

See it in action by watching this short video from the man himself.

The key is to practice them in front of the mirror, try to feel every facial muscle while you’re doing it until they get committed to memory… Practice while you’re in the shower, while you’re watching TV, while you’re reading… you get the picture.

What if you tried Squinching and you feel it’s just not your cup-o’-tea? Don’t worry, there are other ones you can try. Check out Angelica Hermon’s post where she took “Squinching” and Four Other Photo Poses on a test drive.

And if you happen to get in front of my lens, you can expect me to try and direct you to do some of these facial acrobatics. It’s worth a shot peeps!

You’re welcome.
